A comparison of desoxyephedrine (methedrine), and electroshock in the treatment of depression.

چکیده
EARLY in 1950 we treated 34 depressed patients with desoxyephedrine, in an attempt to discover whether it is comparable in efficiency to electroshock in the treatment of depression in a substantial proportion of cases. We origin ally intended to treat approximately 100 consecutive depressed patients admitted to hospital, and to compare the results with those obtained in the previous 200 consecutive depressions treated by electroshock. The results, however, caused us to stop the experiment at a much earlier stage. Rudolf (i@@ç@) found that the results from electroshock and desoxyephedrine were similar, and added †̃¿ †̃¿ If an equally effective and safe alternative to the severe and often uncomfortable E.C.T. could be found, the advantage to the patient would be obvious.' †̃¿ It is worth stating that we started this enquiry in the hope that desoxyephedrine would provide just such an alterna tive. We also had in mind the possibility that desoxyephedrine might enable a proportion of patients to be treated with a smaller deployment of trained psychiatric workers than are required for electroshock.

Anticonvulsant Activity of Viola tricolor against Seizures Induced by Pentylenetetrazol and Maximal Electroshock in Mice
Background: Recently, there has been much more interest in the use of medicinal plants in search of novel therapies for human neurodegenerative diseases such as epilepsy. In the present study, we investigated the anticonvulsant effects of Viola tricolor (V. tricolor) on seizure models induced by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) and maximal electroshock stimulation (MES). Methods: Totally, 260 mice were ...

Salvia verticillata is one of the salvia species which possesses remarkable antioxidant activity. In the present study, we investigated the possible effects of hydro-alcoholic extract from Salvia verticillata plant (SVE) in various models of anxiety, depression and seizure in mice. Mice were randomly divided into control (saline), SVE-treated and standard treatment groups. The SVE-treated group...

Recently a number of pressor drugs of the adrenaline type have come into clinical use for the treatment of low blood pressure following surgical procedures, spinal anxsthesia, circulatory collapse, and surgical and traumatic shock. For therapeutic purposes the ideal pressor drug should be effective by the intramuscular or intravenous route; it should act rapidly; it should produce a sustained e...
